As with most forms of motorsport, F1 has its silly season where rumors fly about drivers moving from one team to another. The odd thing about the silly season in 2009 is many of the rumors may come true now that BMW has given up the ghost in Formula One.

BMW will stop participating in Formula One after the end of the 2009 season. That means the two drivers for the team, Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld, will be free agents and available to any team. While the BMW Sauber Team may be sold to an independent investor, you can be sure both drivers have clauses in their contracts voiding their deals if that happens. Regardless, their availability shakes things up in Formula One.

Robert Kubica is clearly the prize in this case. The Pole has had a horrible 2009 season, but it is clear the problem is the car. While Kubica has whined more than a bit, his talent is unmistakable. Heidfeld, in turn, is more of a steady driver than anything. He isn’t going to charge to a win, but isn’t going to kill you either. He is the German equivalent of Rubens Barrichello, a solid number two driver.

Who will benefit from the driver madness? All bets point to Renault cleaning up. It is expected that Fernando Alonso will leave Renault for Ferrari at the end of the season. The second seat at Renault will also be open as the Piquet experience is put to rest. That means two open seats. One can expect to see either of Heidfeld or Kubica at Renault, probably Kubica.

McLaren fans are undoubtedly thinking Kubica might be a good fit for their team. It is doubtful he will end up at McLaren. Lewis Hamilton has proved he is a great driver, but also proved that like Michael Schumacher, he needs to be the focus of the team. Kubica is not going to put up with being a number two driver, so it seems more likely Nico Rosberg or Hiedfeld could end up at McLaren.

Toyota represents a wild card in all of this. Timo Glock appears to be a driver with a future. Jarno Trulli does not. Toyota has always missed out on its driver selections. Now is a chance to get it right. Bringing in Robert Kubica to team with Timo Glock would be a brilliant move. It could happen, but one has to wonder how enthused Kubica would be about going to a team that has never won in Formula One.

What about Felipe Massa? His incredibly unlucky accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix has left him out for the season. A fractured skull is no laughing matter and one has to wonder if he will be back in 2010. He is the leader of Ferrari, however, so he will be given every chance to make a comeback given his exemplar conduct the last two years compared to his erstwhile teammate. In short, expect a Massa-Alonso Ferrari lineup in 2010 unless Massa cannot go.

The F1 silly season got just a bit sillier given the withdrawal of BMW from the sport. Rumors persist that Toyota and Renault may leave as well. If that happens, it will be complete chaos!

BMW X3 is a compact crossover SUV, which is marketed by the infamous German automaker. It is made based on the 3-Series E46 automobile platform and at present it is the first generation of BMW X3 models. The company designed the new X3 by merging with Magna Steyr in Austria, who will manufacture all the BMW X3s under a special contract. Following the X5, X3 was the second vehicle, which was marketed by BMW as a Sports Activity Vehicle.

BMW had presented the precursor to the model of X3 as a concept vehicle, which was displayed in the year 2003 at the Detroit Auto Show. They presented the preview of SAV based on the platform of 3 series without a vestigial roof and windows.

As the company used parts from the 5 series E39 model in the making of X5, likewise engineers had employed the 3 series parts in manufacturing the BMW X3, especially the suspension at the rear from the E46 330xi. When the X3 was premiered in the second half of the year 2003, BMW had announced that it would equip the latest 4 wheel drive system, in order to power up next generation X3 and X5 models.

Now, the time has come that BMW is looking up seriously at expanding their SUV/SAV line-up. They’re launching the 2010 X3 along with the all new BMW X1, which will be much compact in comparison to the X3, yet amazingly powerful.

The latest X3 and X1 models are featured with latest xDrive system that intervenes with the driver soon after any instability is noticed in driving, and takes charge of the situation, preventing fatal accidents.

Sport utility vehicle sales continue to plummet in the face of surging gasoline prices now topping the three dollar per gallon mark. Indeed, this segment of the vehicle market has produced some of the largest profits for automakers globally and this loss of sales is impacting manufacturer bottom lines the world over. Yet, demand hasn’t dried up altogether and a rebound is possible once gas prices stabilize. For BMW owners, a larger vehicle such as the BMW X5 SAV is almost a necessity no matter what gas prices may be. Yes, the BMW X5 SAV is big topping out at just over 5,000 lbs. Are you in the market for a luxury sport utility vehicle? If so, BMW’s largest model may just have something to offer to you.

For the record, BMW calls their SUVs an SAV: a sport activity vehicle. BMW’s marketing arm felt that customers should know that beyond it’s off road prowess, the BMW X5 SAV can tow as much as 6,000 pounds; carry bicycles with an optional bike rack; hold a canoe on top of its roof; and stow camping or other activity gear in its generous sized rear quarter.

Although new to the game when its first SAV was released during the late 1990s, the technology powering this vehicle is not. Uniting BMW car technology [the X5 is based on the BMW 5 Series] with renowned Range Rover SUV engineering, BMW has fully harnessed the relationship it has with its British off road division. This is important to note as BMW entered the SUV market fresh without having had the benefit of producing a capable sport utility vehicle previously.

The chief attribute of the BMW X5 is its size as the vehicle can carry five passengers comfortably and all of the stuff needed to transport them to their various activities. Furthermore, since the X5 is based on the BMW 5 Series, the SAV shares many features with its passenger car stable mate including: four wheel independent suspension; front and rear wheel anti-roll bars; speed sensing steering; four wheel disc brakes with ABS; electronic stability with traction control and brake assist; and a host of passenger comfort items including Bluetooth wireless; low tire pressure warning; premium sound system; on-board computer; and power everything. A retractable cargo cover completes the BMW X5′s bountiful storage offerings.

Engine choices include a 3.0L I6, a 4.4L V8 or a potent 4.8L V8. Surprisingly, the EPA fuel mileage figures for the smallest and largest engines are the same: you can expect a combined 18 mpg when driving either model numbers that line up with the industry average. A diesel aspirated engine is available for the European market but no plans have been put in place to make that engine available in the US. The BMW X5 is built exclusively in South Carolina, but likely the diesel engine does not meet the stringent US government [EPA] pollution requirements.

BMW is fast at work preparing its second generation X5 a vehicle that should be longer and heavier than the current model. Automotive experts are suggesting that the new BMW X5 will add a third row of seats to accommodate two more passengers and to differentiate the model from its slightly smaller, but also five passenger capacity X3 stable mate.

Prices for the current BMW X5 start out at just over $42,000 and top out at more than $70,000 with all options included. Chief competitors for the BMW X5 include the Mercedes M Class, the Porsche Cayenne, and the Acura MDX.
